ITC Scales Up Sustainable Packaging and Cuts Plastic Use
Powered by its “Sustainability 2.0” vision articulated by chairman and MD Sanjiv Puri, the ITC company has been scaling up investments in developing innovative and eco-friendly packaging solutions that can substitute single-use plastics.
Commitment to Sustainability
ITC has sustained its Plastic Neutrality status for the second consecutive year by successfully managing 60,000 MT of plastic waste in FY23, which exceeds the total amount of packaging it utilized. Highlighting the company’s efforts, B. Sumant, executive director at ITC, stated, “At ITC, we have put in place comprehensive interventions for waste management with a focus on plastics. Our paperboards, paper, and packaging businesses continue to pioneer sustainable solutions that can substitute single-use plastics. Many of our brands and businesses have also innovated to reduce the usage of plastics in line with our commitment to creating a positive environmental footprint.”
Innovative Products and Sustainable Practices
ITC’s paperboards, paper, and packaging businesses are at the forefront of innovation in packaging solutions that minimize the usage of single-use plastics. Through extensive research conducted at its Life Sciences and Technology Centre, ITC has developed a range of sustainable and eco-friendly products, including:
- Recyclable paperboards named “FiloPack” and “FiloServe”
- Biodegradable paperboards like “OmegaBev” and “OmegaBar”
These innovative paperboards provide effective alternatives to plastic-coated containers and cups. In addition, ITC has launched “Indobev,” a paperboard-based product that replaces traditional plastic containers. Furthermore, it has introduced “WrapWell,” a high-strength, multi-layered paper product as a substitute for single-use plastic cutlery, which is food-grade, eco-friendly, and microwave-safe.
Advances in Flexible Packaging
ITC Packaging and Printing business has also advanced the development of recyclable laminates with reduced plastic usage, engineered for greater circularity. The business has launched next-generation solutions, including bio-based and plastic laminate offerings, which cater to diverse industries like food and personal care.
Some notable examples of sustainable transformations include:
- Fiama Shower Gel bottles utilizing 50% post-consumer recycled material
- Engage Perfume and Cologne bottles transitioning to 100% paper-based recyclable cartons
Initiatives in the Foods Business
ITC has implemented measures to reduce plastic usage across its food products as well. For instance:
- Aashirvaad Organic Whole Wheat Atta introduced paper-based packaging, reducing plastic by 25%.
- Sunfeast Yippee! Noodles moved to 100% mono-material PE laminate, replacing multi-layered PET/PE laminate.
- B Natural Juices uses 25% recycled content shrink wrap for secondary packaging.
Furthermore, ITC MasterChef Frozen Snacks transitioned to 100% mono-material PE laminate packaging, eliminating multi-layered plastics.
Shaping a Sustainable Future
By integrating sustainability into its core strategy, ITC not only addresses the pressing issue of plastic pollution but also empowers businesses and consumers to embrace greener practices. Through its innovative solutions, ITC continues to lead the way in making sustainability a key driver of change in the packaging industry.
